Nathan Threatt Faces Familiar Challenge Against Battle-Tested Jose Garcia at War on the Shore II

Charleston’s own, Nathan “The Ultimate” Threatt returns to the ring July 24th at Festival Hall with another opportunity to prove he’s willing to take the road less traveled—even when the road happens to run through his own hometown.

Threatt will meet Houston veteran Jose Garcia in the co-main event on Blue Chip Zone’s War on the Shore II card in what shapes up as one of the night’s most intriguing matchups. Garcia isn’t an unbeaten prospect brought in to fill a slot. He’s a seasoned opponent with respectable punching power who has shared the ring with a who’s who of current contenders. Around boxing circles, he’s earned a reputation as the kind of gatekeeper who exposes prospects that aren’t ready for the next level.

That makes him a legitimate test for Threatt.

Fighting out of Rodriguez Boxing Academy in Summerville under trainer Perry Rodriguez, the southpaw has never been one to pad his record. If anything, his résumé says the opposite.

Three times, Threatt has accepted the challenge of fighting in hostile territory. He traveled to Philadelphia and upset David Hardy Jr. in Hardy’s backyard. He went to Tampa and battled John Garcia to a draw. He then dropped a razor-thin split decision to Jalique Holden in a fight many observers felt could have gone the other way.

It’s a body of work that reflects a fighter—and a team—that has never shied away from risk.

Now, for a change, the challenge comes to Charleston.

Threatt has become one of the city’s bigger attractions, drawing strong support every time he fights locally. But hometown crowds don’t throw punches, and Garcia has built a career on making life difficult for young fighters looking to take the next step. There’s a reason promoters continue to match prospects against him: if you can handle Garcia, you’ve probably earned the right to move forward.

There is, admittedly, a real threat standing across the ring from Threatt on July 24th—no pun intended.

For Threatt, though, that’s exactly the point. His career has been built on embracing difficult assignments rather than avoiding them. War on the Shore II offers another chance to show that his willingness to chase tough fights can pay dividends, this time with Charleston behind him instead of against him.
